History of the Malespina Choir
The Malaspina Choir has been delighting Nanaimo audiences for more than four decades. Established in 1970, the choir has performed throughout Vancouver Island, singing a wide range of repertoire from the classical choral masterworks to jazz, gospel, Broadway and folk. Each December the choir joins with the Nanaimo Chamber Orchestra in a Sing-along Messiah, with partial proceeds to a local charity. In past years the choir has sung with the Vancouver Island Symphony in performances of Faure’s Requiem, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony, and Mozart’s Requiem. The choir has also performed Dido and Aeneas with the Victoria Chamber Orchestra and the Brahms Requiem with the Civic Orchestra of Victoria. The Malaspina Choir thrives on being part of a cultural tradition, learning and being challenged, and our versatility, professionalism, and pride in performance. We welcome new members who share our love of choral singing and joy in musical expression!
